Robert Silver, DVM, MS
Where were you born?

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Where did you live before coming to our area?

I was in Colorado Springs where I started my holistic practice in 1984 where I did house calls for 8 years before I established myself in a stationary clinic there that was called: “Community Animal Clinic”.

Before that I practiced in the Denver area, including practicing  in Boulder in 1983 at what is now called “Broadway Animal Medical Center”.

Prior to that I was in Fort Collins from 1978 to 1982 completing my medical degree in Veterinary Medicine at CSU.

Prior to that I worked in research at the University of Colorado Medical School in Denver. (1977-1978)

Prior to that I was working on my Masters degree in Cardio-Pulmonary Physiology at CSU’s Department of Physiology.

I completed my BS in Animal Science from CSU in 1974.

I went to Columbia University in 1967 but left in my sophomore year to “find” myself.

I graduated from Cheltenham High School near Philadelphia in 1967.

Why are you interested in animals?

I have always resonated with the critters. As a boy I was always out in the forests observing birds, squirrels, snakes and lizards. We had dogs at home and I used to feel I could communicate with them even then. Although I was raised in a semi-rural/suburban (now its all urban, unfortunately) I always wanted to be a cowboy and work with large animals, especially horses.

Now, as a veterinarian, I feel that I am “here” to help those who cannot help themselves, to speak for those who do not have a voice for themselves; to relieve their suffering and to educate those who have animals in their lives on how they can better care for them and their problems.

I also feel that many times the advice I give to the animals filters through and creates health benefits to their human companions. Many people look to me for credible advice about health issues and about herbal and nutraceutical compounds.

What are your favorite animals to work on?

I love them all. I am allergic to Guinea Pigs, though.

Do you have any amazing or funny stories to tell about working with animals?

Every day at work I witness another amazing story about animals’ ability to heal themselves when they are given wholesome food, lots of love, and the appropriate herbs, nutraceuticals, flower essences, aroma therapy and homeopathy.

I also am amazed at how much easier it is to treat an animal when you know what is wrong with them. As a result, I am very assertive about using the appropriate diagnostics each and every patient I see.

Why did you become a veterinarian?

To be able to have a positive effect on the world. Animals are such an important part of our world, of our “Biosphere”. They are like the canaries that used to go down in the mines to detect methane gas—they are sentinels for disease in humans and our entire planet.

By caring for the critters, and educating their guardians to care for them as well, and by going out and lecturing to veterinarians who are themselves also directly responsible for providing care to the critters and educating their guardians, I am reaching out to  a whole heck of a lot of critters and their people, and hopefully, I will leave this planet a little bit better off by the time I myself am ready to pass on to the next world.

What are your favorite things about being a veterinarian?

Seeing my patients grow up strong and healthy from little puppies or kittens to become beloved family members.

Watching the joy in a clients face when they realize that we have been successful in overcoming the many health obstacles that their pet had faced unsuccessfully with conventional medicine alone.

Marveling at the  love and dedication of clients in providing their beloved furry friends with the best in Integrative and Holistic veterinary care.

What are your favorite things about working at Boulders Natural Animal?

Its my place!

Its very rewarding to see the vision that I had for a veterinary hospital in 1987 take shape in the amazing place that is Boulder’s Natural Animal.

Boulder’s Natural Animal is not just about the animals and their problems, but this place is definitely about the guardians. The two legged family members that are the care-givers to their four-legged friends.

Tell us about your pets and your family.

I am married to Hannah who has been instrumental in the establishment of Boulder’s Natural Animal. Hannah manages the business these days from home where she cares for our 3 year old daughter, Callejune (a full time job in itself.)

Calle is just the light of my life. I was worried about having a child in my later years, but it has just been the best thing ever. It keeps me young, and gives me the perspective of joy and wonderment at the world that young children have.

I have an older son, Micah, who is from my previous marriage. Micah lives in Denver, is 36 years old and has become an internet “guru” His goal is to retire by the time he is forty. He probably will retire before me!

We have three cats at home. Chance and Gracie are brother and sister 8 year old pure-bred Bengal cats. They are beautiful, but as Bengals tend to be, they are a handful! Jet is our all black short-haired cat who came to me as a 6 week old kitten with a severe corneal laceration. I repaired the laceration to his eyeball, but Jet’s owner could not keep him, so I did. (Don’t tell the other cats, but he is my favorite!) Jet has the best personality, he is sweet, but fearless and quite adventurous.

We have 1 dog, Bean who is a 9 ½ year old black lab. I am especially fond of Labradors, we see so many of them as patients. Bean is a real sweetie, just don’t say “B-A-L-L” too loud around him unless you want to be tossing it to him all day.

Do you have any hobbies?

I know I work way too much: In addition to my busy life at Boulder’s Natural Animal, I give Powerpoint slide presentations to veterinarians and to pet owners interested in learning more about Integrative Veterinary Medicine, I design herbal and nutraceutical products for pets, consult with a pet food company, and am developing a pet web site with my son.

But, in my copious free time, I do love to play the guitar, both acoustic, electric and dobro. I ride my bike whenever I can, and recently have taken up canoeing with my family on inland lakes and reservoirs. I read trashy science fiction novels, and I love to write. Oh, did I mention my interest in photography? I used to do my own artsy black and white photos and develop and print them myself. I am gradually learning digital photographic technology,. and I am starting to like what I see in my pictures.

My favorite way to spend my free time, though, is to hang out with my amazing daughter and with my incredible wife.

What sports do you like? I love cycling, skiing, and sailing and windsurfing.
What do you want people to know about you that is really really cool?

I'm psychic.

Where did you go to veterinary school?

I graduated from Colorado State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine with my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree in January of 1982.

What are your goals in life?

To become the person my daughter thinks I am.
